The GCMS is a professional organization for physicians (MD and DO) that was founded in 1874 as the Southwest Missouri Medical Society, drawing members from Southwest Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma. The organization was chartered in 1905 and was later recognized as the Greene County Medical Society in 1938 by the Missouri State Medical Association. Our membership is comprised of physicians who live and/or practice throughout Greene County, the greater Springfield metropolitan area, and southwest Missouri.

The GCMS has a long history of advocacy for physicians and patients. GCMS members and committees were instrumental in the development of the DWI Task Force, the Child Advocacy Center, the AED Center of Excellence, and many other community health initiatives. The GCMS provides the chair and the administrative support for the Springfield Flu Immunization Coalition, which annually immunizes over 2500 high-risk adults. GMCS members have worked throughout our history on a local, state, and national level to develop legislation to protect the practice of medicine, improve the delivery of healthcare, and impact public health. The GCMS is an accredited Continuing Medical Education provider and the GCMS staff provides resource assistance to physicians, their staff, and citizens of our communities.
